This specimen features a rich epidote crystallization covering a rodingite matrix. The numerous prismatic crystals, with their brilliant, well-defined faces, display a beautiful olive-green to pistachio-green color and a particularly attractive vitreous luster. Several generations of growth are visible, with the most developed crystals standing out against a finer layer of epidote that accentuates the specimen’s depth and luster. This specimen comes from the rodingite deposits of Val di Viù, in the Italian region of Piedmont.

The Val di Viù, located in the Alps in northwestern Piedmont, is one of Italy’s most renowned localities for alpine rodingites. These rocks formed during the transformation of igneous rocks in contact with serpentinites, within a complex geological context linked to the formation of the Alps.

Rodingites from the Val di Viù are prized by collectors for the quality of their epidote crystals, as well as for their associations with grossular garnet, diopside, and vesuvianite. Specimens from this valley are sought after for the richness of their crystallization and are considered classics in collections of Alpine minerals.
