Peridot - Sapat-Gali, Pakistan
Olivine crystal, forsterite pole, commonly known as “peridot.”...
A thin, highly lustrous, and well-finished hematite blade.
The crystal, ranging in color from black to metallic gray, is distinguished by its very elongated tabular shape and its thinness. Its large faces display a pronounced metallic luster, with numerous growth figures and concentric striations that are particularly visible on the back.
Depending on the orientation of the specimen, light brings out very intense silvery reflections on the brightest faces, creating a beautiful contrast with the darker surfaces.
This specimen was discovered at Puy de Tunisset, in the Puy-de-Dôme department. The deposit is known for its hematites associated with the post-eruption phenomena of the Chaîne des Puys.
2 × 0.4 × 0.1 cm
Perky box included.
Highlights of this specimen
- A classic addition to any collection of French minerals.
- Miniature size for easy display in a showcase
- A particularly interesting specimen for observing variations in luster on the same crystalline surface depending on orientation.
For your information
Hematite is an iron oxide with the formula Fe₂O₃. It can occur in a wide variety of forms and often has a beautiful metallic luster when well crystallized.
In the Chaîne des Puys, hematite crystallization is notably associated with the circulation of fluids within volcanic rocks after they have solidified. The Puy de Tunisset is one of the French sites known for this type of crystallization.
