Orange calcite - Grabiszyce Quarry, Luban District, Poland

This small calcite specimen from the Grabiszyce quarry in the Lubań district (Lower Silesia, Poland) features remarkable orange crystallization on a dark basalt matrix. The crystallization is very dense, and the small scalenohedra display numerous brilliant faces.

The Grabiszyce basalt quarry became famous among collectors following the 2015 discovery of new, particularly attractive calcites. Two distinct crystallization zones were then identified in the quarry. The orange calcites develop primarily in breccia zones within the basalt, where they form crystals often clustered in small fan-like patterns or clusters. The discovery remained under wraps for several years before being more widely presented to collectors in 2018.
