Smoky Quartz - Mount Malosa, Zomba, Malawi
A slab of lustrous smoky quartz crystals, some of which are double-terminated, arranged along preferred directions that might suggest Japanese twinning (= La Gardette twinning), but which actually result from epitaxial growth with feldspars that were subsequently dissolved (remnants are still present).
13.7 x 9.9 x 6.7 cm
Highlights of this specimen:
- The smoky quartz crystals are lustrous and in very good condition.
- This type of quartz, known as “gitter quartz,” is quite rare (‘gitter’ is German for “grid”).
- A specimen combining aesthetic appeal and technical quality.
For your information:
- Known from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia, this specimen comes from Mount Malosa in Malawi, where only a few hundred pieces, mostly small in size, were mined in 2014/2015.
