Kermesite - Dafeng, Shanglin County, Guangxi, China

This Chinese kermesite takes the form of an elegant aggregate of very elongated, lamellar crystals with a strong metallic luster. Their dark gray to brownish color and their growth into long, parallel plates give this specimen a particularly graphic and slender silhouette. Measuring 5.5 cm in length and only a few millimeters thick, this specimen has a striking presence despite its great delicacy.

Highlights of this specimen:

- A beautiful metallic luster, particularly visible on the crystal faces, which contrasts with their dark hues.
- A lamellar crystallization, which clearly distinguishes it from more typical kermesites found in fibrous aggregates or coated in red hues

For your information:

Kermesite is a secondary antimony mineral, with the formula Sb₂S₂O, which forms primarily through the weathering of stibine in the oxidized zones of antimony deposits. It is generally dark red to carmine red, but can exhibit very dark appearances and a submetallic to metallic luster.

These centimeter-sized lamellar crystals first appeared on the market in 2002–2003, reported to originate from the Caiwa Mine in Shaanxi, China. However, subsequent publications have shown that the true locality may be a mine near the city of Dafeng in the Guangxi region, a locality we prefer to highlight.
