Azurite - Kerrouchen, Morocco

A small azurite single crystal with a compact, thick form, featuring large, well-developed, lustrous crystal faces. The crystal displays a very deep blue color—almost blue-black depending on the orientation—with superb, intense blue reflections on certain faces. The terminus is well-defined, and the specimen is in very good condition, despite the presence of natural surface irregularities.

A lovely miniature specimen, particularly interesting for its color, luster, and the unusual thickness of its single crystal.

Azurite is a copper carbonate with the formula Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂. It forms primarily in the oxidation zones of copper deposits, where it results from the weathering of primary copper-bearing minerals. Its intense blue color is one of its most remarkable characteristics.

Azurites from Kerrouchen are a classic of Moroccan mineralogy. They are particularly prized for the intensity of their color, the quality of their crystal faces, and their luster, which can result in highly aesthetic specimens.
