Azurite – Chessy, Rhône, France – Thumbnail No. 178

A specimen comprising a dense cluster of azurite crystals, a very deep royal blue in colour and displaying a beautiful lustre. The crystals vary in shape and size, are closely intergrown and form a highly textured surface.

For information:

- The former copper mines at Chessy, in the Rhône region, are one of the most famous French localities for azurite. The discovery in 1811 of the ‘blue mine’, which was particularly rich in secondary copper minerals, yielded significant quantities of crystallised azurite.
Specimens from Chessy gained such a reputation in the 19th century that the term ‘chessylite’ was proposed to designate azurite; the name is now obsolete as a species name, but is still used by some collectors to refer to azurites from Chessy.
