Fibrous malachite - Katanga, DR Congo
Here is a remarkable fibrous malachite from the Congo, featuring a rich succession of botryoidal formations and clusters of radiating fibers. The malachite displays a deep, intense green, accompanied by a particularly attractive velvety luster. The fibrous aggregates form fans, rosettes, and undulating surfaces, creating a very rich texture and giving the specimen a great deal of depth. The varying orientations of the fibers subtly catch the light, causing the surface’s appearance to change depending on the viewing angle. Measuring 12 cm in length, this piece has a striking presence and is a particularly decorative specimen.
12 × 9 × 4.5 cm.
Highlights of this piece:
- Beautiful, deep, and intense green color.
- Remarkable velvety luster on the surfaces.
- Numerous fan-shaped and rosette-shaped formations.
- Highly visible, radiating fibers that create a lot of depth.
- Beautiful variety of textures and shapes throughout the specimen.
- Generous dimensions that make for an excellent display piece.
For your information:
Malachite is a hydrated copper carbonate with the formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. It forms primarily in the oxidation zones of copper deposits, where it often occurs in association with other secondary copper minerals.
The Congo is a major source of collector-quality malachite. The country’s copper deposits have yielded specimens notable for the intensity of their green color and the diversity of their morphologies, particularly botryoidal and fibrous malachites with highly lustrous surfaces.
This specimen illustrates this latter quality particularly well: rather than presenting simple compact masses, it displays a true diversity of fibrous growths, with clusters and fan-shaped formations that overlap, giving the whole an almost plant-like texture.
