A particularly transparent gypsum crystal with well-developed faces and a clean termination. Its excellent clarity highlights the fine growth striations characteristic of the species, while its natural setting is accompanied by secondary crystals that add texture to the overall appearance. This specimen comes from Arignac, in Ariège, a French locality renowned for the quality of its gypsum crystals.

For your information:

Gypsum is a hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) that crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It is prized by collectors for the diversity of its crystalline forms, ranging from transparent crystals like this one to “spearhead” twinned crystals and the famous “desert roses.”

The town of Arignac, located near Tarascon-sur-Ariège, has long been known for its extensive gypsum deposits formed during the Triassic period. These deposits have supported mining operations for the production of plaster, while also yielding beautiful mineralogical specimens (gypsum, dravite, pyrite, etc.). The transparent crystals from this locality are among the classics of French mineral collections.
