Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, with the chemical formula SiO₂. Its color is due to the presence of iron in the quartz structure and to the effects of natural radiation during its formation. It can range in color from very pale purple to deep purple.
Madagascar is one of the countries that produces amethyst and supplies specimens with a variety of shapes and colors.
With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, amethyst is highly scratch-resistant and is widely used in gemology. The faceted cut, in particular, highlights its color, transparency, and brilliance.
