Sphalerite and fluorite - Elmwood Mine, Tennessee, United States

A beautiful specimen consisting of a matrix rich in sphalerite, displaying two particularly interesting appearances depending on the view.

On one side, the sphalerite forms a coating of small, translucent, orange-brown crystals that are exceptionally lustrous; their adamantine luster is spectacular when held up to the light. The crystals feature numerous small facets that give the surface a very sparkling appearance.

The other side has a lighter appearance, with sphalerite in shades ranging from light brown to honey-colored. Both sides are dotted with a few small cubes of colorless to very slightly bluish fluorite.

The specimen thus displays a striking contrast between the different mineral generations and colors. The peripheral areas show a few damaged crystals, but the center of the specimen retains a rich mineralogical diversity and is of great aesthetic interest.
