- Polyhedral agates were discovered in the 1970s in the state of Paraíba in Brazil. They were formed by completely or partially filling polyhedral cavities, interpreted as being the space between ancient crystals that have not been identified but are often assumed to be calcite (see Le Règne Minéral No. 163).
