Sphen is the old name for titanite, which is still widely used in the gem trade and among collectors.

Titanite is prized in gemology for its remarkable optical properties, particularly its high birefringence and high refractive index. When it is sufficiently transparent and of suitable quality, it can be cut into a gemstone to highlight its luster and optical properties.

Pakistan is among the countries that have yielded high-quality collector’s-grade titanite. Titanite is found there in various geological settings, with crystals sometimes well-developed enough to be preserved as mineralogical specimens.
